The ‘Dhaba’ cushion comes from our love for traditional, hand-stitched Indian floor mattresses used on charpais – simple woven beds still used in villages to sleep outside when the summer heat sets in. The charpai with a well-worn mattress is also a common sight at a ‘Dhaba’- the ubiquitous pit-stop dotting Indian highways, welcoming travellers for a moment of rest and refreshment. The Nila ‘Dhaba’ cushion uses handwoven, naturally dyed upholstery-grade textiles with iterations of classic stripes. Cotton tassels add a playful detail to the design. The patchwork design comes from an intuitive, zero-waste approach, making each cushion slightly unique. 

To make the cushions, we collaborated with rural women artisans from the non-profit PANS. Over the course of several months, we worked with 7 women artisans, creating an intensive craft training programme that helped them up-skill to meet the production requirements. The women are now artisan-trainers in their community, in a village just outside Jaipur. 

Easy to carry, the ‘Dhaba’ cushions makes for beautiful outdoor seating, perfect for sunny afternoons with friends.

Composition & Care

Outer-100% handloom cotton woven with indigo yarn; Cotton linen patch details 

Inner-cotton wool 

Machine wash separately at 30°C for 10 mins and line dry in the shade. 

The natural indigo stripes may fade slightly over time, with exposure to direct sunlight.

The textile may carry subtle irregularities; this is a part of the beauty of handwoven textiles.
