Silk Double Tank Top

The Nila x Anna Valentine silk racer-back vest is a delicately handcrafted yet cool and contemporary piece. The hand "jaali" work at the neckline and hem is a masterful method of exploring seams to let in light and air. Named after intricate Mughal stonework used in windows, this lattice technique gives clothing a sense of lightness and fragility, so they are seemingly ephemeral yet extremely strong. Seams are opened up as much as possible so that each panel of the layered piece appears to float. The matte silk has been handwoven on specialised looms in Karnataka, then dipped lightly into a natural indigo vat in Maharashtra. The upper layer is in shade 1, which means it has been dipped once, and the under layer is in shade 2, having been dipped twice. It requires a highly skilled indigo dyer to achieve such a pale blue, evenly, during the piece-dyeing process. To create this colour of the clear sky, takes significant knowledge and a perfectly balanced vat.
