Silk Kantha Coat
The Nila x Anna Valentine textured kantha coat is an iconic example of contemporary craftsmanship. This archive shape from Anna's studio has been re-interpreted using the intricate craft of kantha - running stitch embroidery traditionally used to create quilts out of repurposed saris. Three layers of silk were used throughout the piece, hand-stitched over weeks by rural women in West Bengal. The matte silk was handwoven on specialised looms in Karnataka. Once the coats were completed, they were dipped three times into natural indigo vats in Maharashtra over four days. Dipping a precious garment into the vat to evenly distribute the indigo dye takes incredible skill.
Pair this piece with denim for a relaxed look, or dress it up. It's completely versatile and timeless - something you may want to pass down through generations, as is common practice with the more traditional kantha quilts, considered family heirlooms.
Dry clean only.
Natural indigo is a millennia-old plant dye. The alchemy of earth, water; air, and indigo leaves creates an unpredictable beauty.
Please handle this precious piece with care, and it may last you a lifetime. The rich natural colour may fade slightly over time, with exposure to direct sunlight.
