Nandi Culottes

 The Nandi Culottes from the Baby Nila collection is made of pure cotton, handwoven on looms in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The gentle blue hue of the textile comes from the weft, dyed with natural indigo in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra.

The roomy pockets on the culottes carry a hand-embroidered design of a cow – an Indian symbol for blessings and good luck – with her calf, a baby ‘Nandi’. 

The embroidery has been done by artisans from the Sodha community in Kutch, using designs developed in the Nila studio. Nila works with the Kutch-based non-profit organisation Shrujan, to reach out to the artisans, particularly the women embroiderers, who traditionally do not leave their home and hence struggle to find meaningful opportunities for economic empowerment. But by taking the work to them, this hurdle is overcome and the women are able to use their expert skills to create economic opportunities for themselves.
