Ripple Ikat
Inspired by the gentle movement of water, the Ripple Ikat was designed in the Nila studio and expertly translated into handwoven textiles on looms in Pochampally, Telangana, a historically important centre for ikat weaving.
The Ripple ikat textile is a minimalist interpretation of the classic feather-pattern ikat design of the Pochampally weaving cluster that is recognised with its own Geographic Indicator (GI) tag – an important marker of provenance and craft authenticity.
The seemingly simple textile took over a year to develop because of the natural indigo yarn, rarely used in an ikat warp today. The indigo yarn was dyed at vats in Maharashtra in shades of 2 and 6 from the Nila indigo rainbow, then brought to Pochampally and set to the loom in a carefully designed warp pattern, giving the cloth its delicate striated pattern.
The versatile design of this soft but enduring textile makes it well suited for both soft furnishing like cushion covers and napkins as well as clothing that reflect unique style.
