Nila’s handwoven linen napkins in Shade 2, Shade 4 and Shade 5 are favourites from the perennial collection. The shade number refers to the number of dips that yarns have been treated to. Each dip enhances the depth of the indigo hue. Dyed by hand and with 24-hour intervals between each dip, this is a patient, time consuming process.

For this set of napkins, the yarns were dyed at natural indigo vats Maharasthra and handwoven into light, breathable linen at the Kanhirode Weavers’ Cooperative Society in Kerala that work primarily with women weavers who partake in share of the profits. Linen is usually woven on heavy-duty factory machines. It changes structure considerably when adapted to handloom, developing an openness of the weave that lends lightness and breathability. The generous hems have been finished with mitered corners, stitched by the women at the social enterprise.

The Shades of Indigo napkins will naturally soften with regular washing. Once ironed, the fabric regains its original crispness. Pair the solid colour napkins with our abstract tie-dye Still Waters tablecloth and Ink-Edge banana fibre placemats to create a memorable indigo-inspired table setting.

100% Handwoven Linen

Hand wash gently with cold water and line dry in the shade. Natural indigo is a millennia-old plant dye. The alchemy of earth, water, air and natural indigo creates an unpredictable beauty.

Please handle this precious piece with care and it may last you a lifetime. Wash separately for the first few washes. The rich natural colour may fade slightly over time with exposure to direct sunlight.
