The Sampler cushion was born from our experiments mixing embroidery samples and techniques. The process of researching craft techniques has helped us created a growing library of stitch samples that used in our collection and shared with artisan groups as design inputs. The Sample Cushion carries a light embroidery along the edges in two motifs, that of a running vine and a chain of flower buds.
The base fabric is made of handwoven cotton chambray with a weft yarn-dyed in natural indigo. The fabric has been hand-dyed and woven on looms in West Bengal. The cushion has been finished with hand-embroidery in natural indigo thread at an independent artisan unit in Jaipur. The unit is run by master embroiderer Bholu, who moved to Jaipur from Uttar Pradesh to set up his embroidery unit. The unit engages four other artisans, specialising in Aari, Chikankari and Zardosi embroidery.
The soft, natural textile and thread detailing of this cushion is designed for comfort and easy elegance. On its own, in pairs or in an ensemble of a mix-match cushion set, the Sampler cushion is versatile enough to fit into any interior scheme, bringing the soothing beauty of indigo and handmade textiles to any space.
Composition & Care
Handwoven Cotton Chambray
Hand wash separately in cold water and line dry in the shade. Handwoven textiles may carry subtle irregularities; this is a part of the beauty of textiles made by hand.
Natural indigo is a millennia-old plant dye. The alchemy of earth, water; air, and indigo leaves creates an unpredictable beauty. The rich natural colour may fade slightly over time, with exposure to direct sunlight.
