Zero-Waste Rice Bag
As the name might suggest, Nila’s Zero-Waste Rice Bag is inspired by the Japanese Komebukuro - a cotton drawstring bag used to carry offerings of rice at a temple - and by the intention of ‘zero-waste’ design.
Textiles used in the Nila collections are made by hand, with great care. The Zero-Waste Rice Bag was conceptualised as a beautiful solution to repurposing off-cut textile pieces from our studio. The bag is made by collaging textiles together using a strong, simple Kantha stitch. Accents like a fringe edge and a heart-shaped pebble motif have been added in to give the bag a contemporary, youthful feel. The pairing of white-on-indigo stitching continues as our homage to the iconic Japanese combination often used in Sachiko embroidery.
Each bag has been hand stitched and embroidered by the women associated with our sister organization LBCT, working with Self Help Groups (SHGs) around Jaipur. The women were trained by the master embroiderers who are full-time members of the Nila studio. The up-skilling sessions have been a valuable source of supplementary income for the women.
The Zero-Waste Rice Bag is a memorable piece of sustainable design, a versatile addition to any style and a thoughtful present for a loved one.
Composition and care:
Linen and cotton offcuts
Dry clean only
Natural indigo is a millennia-old plant dye. The alchemy of earth, water, air and indigo leaves creates an unpredictable beauty. The rich natural colour of the indigo textile may fade slightly over time, with exposure to direct sunlight. This bag is entirely hand stitched and may fray with use over time.
